Chronic Pain Syndromes

Pain relief may be the most important application for methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). Reduction of inflammation and inhibition of pain impulses are the likely mechanisms of action. MSM has a wide variety of applications, particularly for various forms of arthralgia (i.e., rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis), low back pain, soft tissue damage, occupational and sports injuries, fibromyalgia, and dental discomfort and muscle cramps. MSM is found to reduce or obviate the need for over the counter and prescription painkillers, including the widely dispensed nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Reducing the use of these drugs can yield important health dividends by lessening the risk of intestinal permeability defects, inhibition of cartilage synthesis, kidney and liver disease. In some cases MSM has eliminated the need for surgery. Such as knee or hip replacement, or surgery for low back pain. Even when MSM cannot eliminate the need for surgery, a high percentage of patients can delay the need for surgical correction for a few years. The use of msm does not usually produce instant pain relief; it may take weeks, or months depending on the individual.
